The Summerland Museum and Archives Society is a team dedicated to keeping Summerland's history alive year-round in Summerland, British Columbia. The Summerland Museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, research, interpret, and display objects that are historically significant to our community. These objects reflect the history of the Summerland District and the immediate surrounding area, from the period from pre-contact, including Indigenous history, to the present. Our vision statement is to be committed to the passionate exploration of Summerland’s history. We carry out this vision statement by engaging the community in a variety of public programming such as historical tours, educational activities for children, exhibits, and hosting presentations.
Summerland is situated within the beautiful South Okanagan Valley. Summerland (population 11,615) is an agricultural community with a location that makes it a natural tourist hot spot, particularly in relation to wine tourism, the Ornamental Gardens, and the Kettle Valley Railway. It has many opportunities for indoor and outdoor recreation, as well as a vibrant arts community.
The Summerland Museum and Archives Society is looking for a temporary 11-week full-time student to work as a Summer Program Coordinator at the Summerland Museum, from June 2020 to August 29, 2020. This position will provide direct hands-on, career-related experience for a student considering a career relating to heritage or education work.
The Summer Program Coordinator will lead the development of the Online Summer History Programs, as well as museum tours. The Summerland Program Coordinator will additionally support the day-to-day operations of the museum by welcoming visitors, answering phone calls, and behind-the-scenes tasks.
This temporary position is supported by the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations. Candidates must meet the Young Canada Works Eligibility Criteria (www.youngcanadaworks.ca) and register with the Young Canada Works online (www.youngcanadaworks.ca).
The ideal candidate will:
• be currently enrolled in relevant undergraduate studies such as
History, Museum Studies, Education, or other relevant programs.
• preferably have experience in the development and implementation of programs for children.
• have an outgoing personality, and ideally be comfortable in front of a camera
• have experience using PC operating systems and the ability to work with new software.
• have education, practical training, and/or experience working with children and the public.
• have an interest in museums and history, preferably with a focus on early 20th century Canadian history, including local Indigenous history.
• have excellent organizational ability.
• have strong communication, interpersonal, oral, and written skills.
The successful candidate is required to supply a criminal record check and a copy of their credentials.
Position Status: Summer Program Coordinator
Hours of Work: 35 hours/week
Rate of Pay: $14.60 per hour
