This week for our artifact story, we’re sharing this delicate piece of pottery made by Marion Cartwright (1888 – 1962). Earlier this year we shared a watercolour painting by Marion’s mother, Ivy. Clearly an appreciation for the arts passed from mother to daughter. In an interesting twist, this piece was donated to us by Marjorie Croil – herself a notable Summerland artist!

Marion Cartwright moved with her family to Summerland in 1907 and lived the rest of her life here. After her parents passed, she took over management of the family orchard. She was very involved in the community, including the Log Cabin pottery workshop on Peach Orchard Road.

In the second image, you can see a photograph from 1925 of Marion (left) working alongside fellow potters Doris Cordy, Mrs. Eckersley, and Mrs. Croil Sr. We are happy to say that our Museum has examples of work from all of these women artists!

Cette semaine, l’objet qui nous intéresse est cette délicate poterie fabriquée par Marion Cartwright (1888-1967). Plus tôt cette année, nous avions présenté une aquarelle de la mère de Marion, Ivy. Il semble que l’amour des arts soit passé de la mère à la fille. Il est amusant de noter que cette poterie nous a été donnée par Marjorie Croil qui est elle-même une artiste bien connue de Summerland!

Marion Cartwright est arrivée à Summerland avec sa famille en 1907 et elle y a passé le reste de sa vie. Après la mort de ses parents, elle a pris la direction du verger familial. Elle était très impliquée dans la communauté et notamment dans l’atelier de poterie de la cabane en rondins de Peach Orchard Road.

La deuxième image est une photographie de 1925 montrant Marion (à gauche) en compagnie d’autres potières : Doris Cordy, Mme Eckersley et Mme Croil Sr. Nous sommes heureux d’avoir au Musée des œuvres de toutes ces artistes!
