The Summerland Museum and Archives has several school toolkits that are available to loan for use in the classroom
Each toolkit is based on the current BC Curriculum Core Competencies and Big Ideas.
Enclosed in each toolkit are suggested lesson plans, differentiated reproducible worksheets, and all necessary resources.
Toolkits can be used for short activities, stand-alone lessons, or as a series of lessons, depending on the teacher’s requirements.
Please contact the museum to book a toolkit or for further information.
School Toolkit #1 - The Mystery Suitcase
The Mystery Suitcase contains 7 mystery artifacts from the Summerland Museum. Students are able to handle each of the artifacts and are tasked with working out what the objects are. Students develop their inquiry skills by asking questions, making inferences, and drawing conclusions.
School Toolkit #2 - Photo Analysis
Toolkit #2 contains a series of photographs from the Summerland Archives and frameworks to help students analyse the photographs. Pupils learn how to decode photographs and how to use them as historical evidence. Students are also encouraged to critically assess sources of information by considering their purpose and how they are affected by their provenance.
School Toolkit #3 - Summerland Geology
Students learn all about the unique geology of Summerland in Toolkit #3. They are able to handle geological specimens, such as Summerland’s famous cannonballs, and learn about how these rock formations were formed.
The Education Collection
The Summerland Museum and Archives has an Education Collection. While most of our collections items are in storage or on display, the Education Collection contains artifacts that can be handled by the public and can therefore be used in educational settings. The Education Collection contains a wide range of artifacts such as WW1 and WW2 medals and insignia, geology specimens, vintage books and clothes, and household items such as washboards and antique kitchenware. If you are interested in loaning items from the Education Collection for use within the classroom, please contact the museum at info@summerlandmuseum.org.
