ID: An off-white coloured pottery ashtray that reads “Opening of arena, curling and swimming pool complex, Summerland B.C., March 27, 1976.” The centre of the ashtray is divided into three wedges, with drawings of a hockey game, a curling match, and people of all ages swimming in a pool.
Description: Cendrier en céramique blanc cassé portant l’inscription « Opening of arena, curling and swimming pool complex, Summerland B.C., March 27, 1976 » (Inauguration du complexe aréna, curling et piscine, Summerland C.-B., 27 mars 1976). Le centre du cendrier est divisé en trois parts arborant les dessins d’une partie de hockey, d’un match de curling et de personnes de tous âges nageant dans une piscine.
Today’s artifact story takes us back to March 27, 1976 (almost exactly 47 years ago) for the grand opening of the Summerland Arena, Curling Rink, and Swimming Pool Complex.
There is a bit of irony that these recreation facilities were being celebrated with an ashtray of all things, but it was a different time! Despite the ironic function of the pottery piece, it documents an important milestone for our community – and the drawings are quite charming as well.
After the town’s first indoor arena (built in 1950) was condemned in the early 1970s, the District of Summerland engaged in public consultation and a referendum about how to proceed with fulfilling the recreation needs of the community. Hmm . . . sound familiar?
The total project cost for the brand-new indoor arena, curling rink, banquet room (see photo 2), and separate aquatic facility (see photo 3) came to $2,815,885, with nearly half of the expense being covered by grants from the Province of British Columbia.
Lately there has been much talk about the need to replace the Summerland Aquatic and Fitness Centre, which is in dire need of upgrades. It has been proposed that, instead of upgrading the aged facility, a brand-new and bigger facility be built adjacent to the Summerland Arena.
The Summerland Arena was found to be in good shape when assessed recently and is expected to be usable by the community for at least a few more decades before it, too, may need to be replaced. Not bad, considering our first arena lasted less than 25 years.

L’objet du jour nous ramène au 27 mars 1976 (il y a presque 47 ans jour pour jour), jour de l’inauguration du complexe comprenant l’aréna, la piste de curling et la piscine de Summerland.
Certes, il peut paraître ironique qu’on ait choisi un cendrier pour commémorer des établissements de loisir mais c’était une autre époque! En dépit de sa fonction ironique, cette poterie commémore une étape importante de notre ville avec des dessins somme toute bien charmants.
Après que la première aréna couverte (construite en 1950) a été condamnée au début des années 1970, le District de Summerland a organisé une consultation publique et un référendum pour savoir comment faire pour satisfaire les besoins de la communauté en matière de loisirs. Tiens!... ça vous rappelle quelque chose?

Ces derniers temps, on parle beaucoup de la nécessité de remplacer le Centre aquatique et de conditionnement physique de Summerland qui a besoin d’importantes réparations. Au lieu de rénover l’établissement vieillissant, il a été proposé de construire un tout nouveau bâtiment plus grand à côté de l’aréna de Summerland.
Un audit récent a permis de déterminer que l’aréna de Summerland est en bon état et devrait pouvoir servir encore pendant quelques décennies au moins avant de devoir être remplacée elle aussi. Ce n’est pas si mal quand on sait que la première aréna a tenu moins de 25 ans.
